Everyone who I speak to at present seem to be saying the same thing “Where has this year gone to?” It only seems like five minutes ago that members were looking forward with great anticipation to a full season of matches. Suddenly, and sadly, the season is now racing towards its close.
The Fab Four, namely Sharon Kenny, Marion Kelsey, Gail Hawke and Dot Luff, who triumphed through the preliminary rounds of the two woods competition to become Champions of Devon, were unable to replicate their form in The National Finals. They did win the quarter final match but were knocked out in the semi-final, albeit by a small margin. Nevertheless, we are very proud of them getting as far as they did. The East of Exe evening triples league has been a triumph for Ottery as the club finished the season having played 12 matches and winning all 12 matches. In the closing days of the season some matches have had to be cancelled due to intense heat, illness of players or operations, or even holidays! Perhaps a day that will be remembered was the Bowls Away Day, when 31 members of the club travelled by coach to Wadebridge in Cornwall, where the local bowling club gave us a very warm welcome, and then beat us! A sumptuous meal was arranged for us at a carvery on the way home, and the organisers of the day are to be thanked for all their hard work.
